Flight Attendant Appreciation Day is an Actual Holiday (And It’s Coming Next Month)

Working as a flight attendant was once a fairly glamorous job, and in some parts of the world it still is. However world travel itself is no longer as rare, so the job lacks some of the mystique it once did. And since travel is no longer the province of the wealthy, and has become much more democratized, that too has lowered the status of those who work in air travel.

Flight attendants are in a customer service job with safety duties as well. At most US airlines they’re unionized.

In the regulated era of US airlines, carriers competed over how much they could give to passengers since they weren’t permitted to compete on price. Planes, too, weren’t nearly as full. Now with passengers being given fewer amenities (other than inflight internet and entertainment choices) and seats more crowded and closer together passengers aren’t even happy.

Working as a flight attendant has been transformed over the last 40 years from high status to much lower status in American esteem. One day a year though we’re supposed to re-elevate the role. Yet somehow I’ve never really internalized that May 31 is international Flight Attendant Appreciation Day.

American Airlines is providing food and beverage in mainline and regional flight attendant crew rooms, and offering onboard treats.

Flight Attendant bases will receive the following in the crew room:

  • Biscoff & Go cookie butter and breadsticks (direct shipping to crew rooms subject to final distribution logistics).
  • Belgian Boys Wafels – Orders will be pushed from Michael Lewis Co to the kitchens who will deliver to the crew rooms.
  • Dasani Water .5 liter bottles (32 per case) – Orders will be pushed from Michael Lewis Co to the kitchens who will deliver to the crew rooms.

Mainline crew rooms: BOS, CLT, DCA, DFW, EWR, JFK, LAX, LGA, MIA, ORD, PHL, PHX, RDU, SFO, STL
Regional crew rooms: CLT, DCA, DFW, JFK, LAX, LGA, MIA, ORD, PHL, PHX

Onboard treats

  • Kind Bars will be placed on the forward galley counter for every 5-31-19 hub departure.
  • Packages of 4 on mainline, packages of 2 on regionals. All tied off with red ribbons.
  • Nutritional information will be on each bar.
  • Thank you note from Jill Surdek on Kind Bar hang tag.

Will you do anything special to go out of your way to thank flight attendants? Remember that tipping generally isn’t permitted.
