Hyatt Adds 57 Small Luxury Hotels to its Earn/Burn Portfolio

Last summer Hyatt announced a deal with Small Luxury Hotels of the World to allow members to use their points to stay at SLH’s 500 hotels in 80 countries, and to earn points and stay credit at those properties as well.

Small Luxury Hotels of the World is a collection of independent properties, and it’s more of a booking relationship than a hotel chain. And Hyatt’s deal is something similar to what they have with MGM’s M life Rewards — let’s share customers, offering points-earning and redemption.

Hyatt launched the partnership in December with just 54 hotels participating. A month ago they added 56 more. Today they’re announcing 57 more properties added to the relationship, which gets them close to one-third of the SLH property collection.

That’s still a far cry from what was expected when the deal was announced in August, but also far better than where things stood at the start of December.

Here are the new hotel additions for Hyatt members:

The Liming Bequia

On the redemption side more choices is better. And there are some fantastic properties included. Many seem overpriced in points relative to the room rates they command.

My worry is that Hyatt added a new top redemption category 8 to its award chart to accommodate the priciest SLH hotels. This suggests to me that Hyatt is reimbursing SLH properties more for redemption stays than their own Hyatt hotels, so they need to bill members for more points to cover it. However ultimately this may make it easier for pre-existing Hyatt properties to go up to category 8 in the future (“we’re only adding a handful of the priciest hotels to this new tier”).

On the earning side it’s crucial to comparison shop. To take advantage of Hyatt points-earning and stay credit you need to book through Hyatt, and no best price guarantee applies.

In terms of how Hyatt members are using the SLC relationship,

The following markets rise to the top with the most SLH hotel member bookings, with Rome recently surpassing London with the most member bookings:

1. Rome, Italy
2. London, England
3. Venice, Italy
4. Shanghai, China
5. Santorini, Greece

  1. Nice! Love Le CEP in Beaune, been there 3 times. Some nice additions in Portugal in Cat 4

Curious about pricing differential vs SLH directly. Wish Globs got the same treatment as Inspired status with SLH. But more options is always better.

  2. Your last point is crucial. The rates for these properties through hyatt are much higher than the best available and promotional rates found elsewhere. Sadly, this makes the offering nearly unusable.

  3. This is great news. Having tried all of the majors, Hyatt has the best program for me. The two knocks were small footprint in the USA for full service hotels and the lack of redemption hotels in Europe. The partnership with SLH continues to address the latter issue.

Beachfan: I agree with you regarding the lovely Hotel Le Cep but lately I have been staying at the similarity price Hotel d’Beaune which I consider to be superior. Give it a try.

  4. Gary,
What is going on with The Franklin London ? First it was a Choice Preferred Partner Hotel then after you posted this update it appeared under the Hyatt/SLH partnership. And now no longer showing on the Hyatt site ? I have been looking at this hotel for some time. Once it posted as a catagory 6, 25,000 points.. It would have been a definite option for London. Any Ideas ?
