Marriott Flubs Rollout of New Promotion, But Double Points is Coming

Marriott has been sending mailers out about a new promotion coming up offering double points after your second stay.

They didn’t get it out in time for the launch of their new program brandding (“Bonvoy”) but they still got the mailers up too early because the website it directs you to in order to register, MarriottBonvoy.com/doubletake, isn’t up yet.

However at least we know what Marriott will be offering:

  • Double points starting with your second stay between March 19 and June 4, 2019
  • Registration by May 21 will be required.

With most brands you earn 10 base points per dollar, so this promotion means an extra 10 points per dollar after your second stay. I value Marriott points at $0.007 apiece so that’s like earning an extra 7% rebate on each of your stays.

That’s bigger than when Hilton offers double points (given the same base earn and each point worth less), and I like it better than Hilton’s fixed points promotion this quarter but I don’t think it is as generous as Hyatt’s new promotion.

I’m not sure why Marriott didn’t announce a promotion to coincide with the launch of their new program name, why they are spending money on printing and postage to announce the promotion, or why they’ve failed to get up the promotion website that they’re mailing members about — other than to say of course that’s what happened.

  1. You could have shortened the title to “Marriott Flubs.” It’s a general and accurate statement, these days.

  2. Got a thrilling email from Marriott today: “Your Starwood Preferred Guest® Card from American Express also has a new name: The Marriott Bonvoy™ American Express® Card. Card Members will automatically receive the new Card design starting in June 2019 and over the following months.”

Of course many of us will have cancelled our cards by then, hence why they are rolling these out 4 to 6 months from now….

  3. same problems with lousy website, non-existent customer service, same weak promos but hey, we got a new name! Bonvoy! All the problems solved!
