During Government Shutdown Global Entry Interviews are Cancelled, No One is Protecting Data Privacy

During the government shutdown Global Entry enrollment centers are generally closed. In the first couple days of the shutdown I heard from two readers who said they managed to keep their appointments.

The Department of Homeland Security is largely though not entirely exempt from the shutdown. For instance 54,935 out of 60,109 Customs and Border Protection employees continue work, and perhaps the employees involved hadn’t yet gotten the memo.

All that’s on the website is that the website isn’t being updated. Helpful.

However several readers have gotten emails and even personal phone calls letting them know their appointment cannot be honored. So people are working to cancel appointments, but not working to keep those appointments. And apparently little regard is being paid to privacy.

Here’s one email that went out Friday afternoon cancelling appointments in Phoenix,

Good morning,

Please be advised The Phoenix Global Enrollment Center will be closed till further notice due to our Government shut down.

Your appointment will be cancelled and you will have to reschedule at a later time.

Sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Respectfully,

XXXXXX XXXXXXXX
Supervisory CBP Officer
Office of Field Operations
Phoenix Sky Harbor Intl. Airport

The email was sent to hundreds of people. I know this because their email addresses are all listed in the To: field.

This is a reminder to be skeptical of bureaucracies managing large databases of personal information. It’s not just Marriott failing to guard your personal information. Remember that the government’s Office of Personnel Management hack was worse, containing security clearance information on large numbers of federal employees.

  1. Does this also affect Enrollment on Arrival ? I had scheduled my interview for next week at LAX but I’m guessing that might not happen ? No emails received on my end of any cancellations though…
    Worse timing ever lol

  2. Agreed about large bureaucracies – private and public – protecting your data. This is one of the reasons I would rather wait in line at Customs for a little longer than hand over my fingerprints…

  3. Just a data point from us…We had a Nexus renewal interview scheduled for December 28 in Detroit. All indications were that it was still on and accepting reservations through 12/24 even, and no indication on website of being affected by shutdown. The evening of 12/26 an email was sent to us indicating the office will be closed 12/28 and we would need to reschedule the Nexus interview. (The note didn’t include others in the To: as Gary mentioned.) We also received a phone call that evening of 12/26 notifying us. I’m not sure why they didn’t call earlier, maybe they were hoping for an earlier reopening but ran out of funds.

Unfortunately we already had nonrefundable hotel reservations (traveled from Chicago to Detroit for this). Made the best of it and visited Greenfield Village while we were there, and will need to reschedule when things open again.

  4. In the past, all of the many shutdown has resulted in a free vacation for federal employees. They have always gotten back pay. The only people affected are those with no savings in the bank, government contractors, and the general public. Both Trump and Pelosi should stop being so stubborn and agree on a compromise figure and allow Pelosi to spend a little for her own pet projects.

  5. “This is a reminder to be skeptical of bureaucracies managing large databases of personal information. ”

That’s an unnecessary blow at people who are working without a paycheck because of a primadonna who wants a monument to himself as a legacy. Putting addresses in the To field instead of BCC has nothing to do with government databases, but instead is a mistake made by an employee who is probably struggling to pay their bills while wealthy politicians score points with their bases.

Once again, Gary manages to disappoint.

  6. @Derek you mean the figure Trump wants for HIS pet project?! Both the D and R agreed on a budget deal, its Trump that renegged on it. But thanks for playing.

  7. Of course Trump being painted as the bad guy for finally being the 1st to actually act on securing the border, why are Dems pushing back so hard? Because illegals coming illegally into the country looking for handouts paid for by hard working Americans, provide votes for those trying to destroy the country while Trump is president.

  8. I just love watching snowflakes doing their whiny little biatch dance while they melt.

Those civil servants at home watching TV will still end up getting their money when the show is over. Yes, for the meantime they need to live off their own savings, but I guess that just reinforces good fiscal management. If you don’t have money saved for a rainy day, maybe you deserve to go on a diet … or be proactive in your choice of banking partners. If you are a veteran and affected by the shutdown, Navy Federal will cover your missed paychecks until the shutdown ends.

So you want sympathy? Webster’s has it for you. Look for it between shite and syphilis.

  9. I came into the US via HOU on Jan 3. Asked CPB if we could get an Global Entry Interview. Once the flight had all passed, we went and he gladly did the interview. Granted, HOU was pretty empty.

  10. A wall on the border with Mexico would be a fitting monument to American stupidity and racism. That’s slightly redundant because those two words are pretty much synonymous.

In short, a Mexican wall is stupid and racist because it would solve nothing except making it harder for poor brown folk to come here and do the jobs Americans need but don’t want to do. That’s all Trump and the stupid, racist followers of his want. Improving border security and preventing illegal immigration requires improving security on all borders and addressing all principal means of illegal immigration.

About half of illegal immigrants over stay visas. As far as I know, Trump has not asked for a dime to address that issue. He and his followers are only concerned about brown folk from Central America who he claims pose a threat to national (i.e., White folk/Republican) security. Illegal immigration is not really the concern. Their issue is that Republicans and Whites are losing their monopoly on power and privilege and blame immigration, legal and illegal. Border security would mean protecting all borders not just the one with Mexico. Drugs and terrorists (Trump lies when he says terrorists have been caught) discouraged by a wall on the Mexican border will find other means to enter like the porous 5,500-mile border with Canada. Wouldn’t we need a wall there, too? Anyone who buys a home security system that protects the front of the house but not the back isn’t buying much security.

That’s why a permanent and visible wall on the border with Mexico would be so appropriate. It would proclaim to the world for all time just how racist and stupid many in this country are. Trump has his followers so worked up they are begging to pay for it.

  11. My Global Entry interview appointment on Jan 6th, 2019 at Dulles International airport (IAD) office was cancelled. No notification was sent to me and nowhere correct information was found but when I logged into my application process at https://ttp.cbp.dhs.gov It was posted there that my interview has been cancelled (for reason – Blank) and I need to reschedule it.

  12. @747naked: Can you even vote? I don’t mean vote for which Bubba roots you in your cell, but vote for an actual leader of a non-shithole country? And for the record, your India IS a shithole. The morons you’ve elected have your country poverty-ridden, weak and so afraid China will send over a platoon of their worst soldiers to conquer your shithole in shame … again. You still shake with fear every time you see Chinese or Pakistani, right?

  13. @John: Does it hurt when you think, Jethro? Maybe next year in fourth grade you will have a better concept of which words are actually synonymous.

There’s nothing racist about enforcing immigration laws. Canada does it. So does Mexico. Even shithole countries such as India do it. Are things different on your planet? A wall isn’t designed specifically against your “poor brown folks” rather than against criminal entry into the US. If the shoe fits, wear it.

If your “poor brown folks” come here to work, then they should get visas. But here’s a clue for you, Jethro — they don’t all come here to work. And those that do work, seldom pay taxes, yet suck off the taxpayer tit. Now go ahead, Jethro, and tell us the lie about how they pay their fair share of taxes. Come on, Jethro, go for it.

“Improving security on all borders.” Precisely how many borders do we have, Einstein? There are two. Put your last week’s math lesson to use and let’s count them. One. Two. Precisely how many caravans of several thousand turds try to cross from the Canadian border? Are you going to tell us your LBB will swim from Mexico or Guatemala to Canada and try to sneak across the border? You must have an IQ of 7.

“ … addressing all principal means of illegal immigration.” You lie when you state 1/2 of all legal visa holders overstay. But let’s ignore that for now, Jethro … the pesky little issue is that entering illegally is a real federal offense. Overstaying your visa is not. We know who the overstayers are because — surprise, surprise — we have their fingerprints, photo and data on file. We know who they are. We know they aren’t likely known drug dealers. We know where they go. And ultimately most leave or normalize their status.

But let’s say visa overstayers are a problem. Tell us, Jethro, how shall we deal with that? Never issue visas anymore? Hire more ICE to hunt them down? But you and your deformed snowflakes don’t like ICE. When they are caught, they are ultimately deported and not issued visas again. Meanwhile, your “poor brown folks” just wade across the Rio Grande again because they never bother to apply for visas in the first place.

The current Administration doesn’t have to “claim” your little brown brothers pose a threat. They DO pose a threat … at least some of them. Officer Singh died at the hands of one of your little brown brothers. The little girl on the San Francisco pier was murdered by one of your LBBs. Molly Tibbetts also was kidnapped and murdered by one of your LBBs. There were umpteen more in 2018. Even if the $5b wall could have prevented only 5 murders, I’m sure the families of the murder victims would think it was a worthwhile investment.

Your feeble brain is pulling stories out of your ass, Jethro. The Administration is not only looking for a wall to solve the issue. In addition to a wall, they want other comprehensive measures to control illegal immigration. You and your fellow whiny little bitches, though, have obstructed that at every turn. Your syphilitic concept of sanctuary has prevented the deportation of several who have gone on to murder innocent citizens. In addition to physical barriers, a comprehensive immigration reform is needed, but you clowns haven’t the balls to even begin that.

Jethro, I have a colleague that’s a M.D. Post your contact data and he’ll be happy to set up an appointment for you. After he prescribes you a pair of balls, I’m sure he will help you have your extra chromosome surgically removed.

  14. Trump lies, lies, lies, lies, lies about every f-in thing. The constantly whining Baby Prez is having a tantrum to build his useless vanity wall that could be hopped over or dug under, while most illegals fly into the country and just overstay their visas, as John pointed out above. Trump, who cheats on his immigrant wife with strippers and hookers, is a life long con artist. It’s amazing how gullible some people are to believe his lies and fall for his cons. Truly amazing.

  15. @JC, A border wall with Mexico will be ineffective and serve only as a fitting and enduring monument to American stupidity and racism. If only other examples shining examples of like slave auction houses and Japanese internment camps were preserved so well. There are other measures that will work better and cost less. Democrats continue to support them.

FYI, The statement that about half of illegal immigrants overstay visas that you claim is a lie was made by House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R CA on August 15, 2018.
    https://www.politifact.com/california/statements/2018/aug/24/kevin-mccarthy/mostly-true-visa-overstays-account-half-all-people/

In fact the percentage of people becoming illegal immigrants through visa overstays has been rising. Today about 2/3rds of those staying in the country illegally do so through visa overstays. Some of those who overstay visas commit crimes too. Trump won’t tell you about them. If people being in the country illegally was a valid national emergency there would be a massive effort to deal with visa overstays. But to my knowledge Trump hasn’t asked for a dime for that. Visa applications and documentation from their home countries provide enough information to find those people relatively easily. Enforcement of the laws against one group but not a different group that has committed the same offense is the textbook definition of discrimination. In this case, concentrating solely on the brown folk from Central America is pure racism hyped by the President of the United States.
    https://www.nbcnews.com/news/latino/visa-overstays-outnumber-illegal-border-crossings-trend-expected-continue-n730216

$5 billion is only a down payment on the wall. Trump promised Mexico, not you and me, would pay. The total cost is currently more than $20 billion. That number is sure to rise. $20 billion for a wall is pure waste and would be better spent on projects for the armed forces that actually enhance our national security and maybe we could improve health care for active duty servicemembers, veterans and their families. Stars and Stripes reports that more than 20 active duty and veterans commit suicide every day.
    https://www.stripes.com/news/us/va-reveals-its-veteran-suicide-statistic-included-active-duty-troops-1.533992

But Trump shot off his big mouth about a wall in the campaign, broke his promise about getting Mexico to pay, and is now trying to create a fake national security emergency. The majority of American taxpayers do not support Trump’s wall or Trump’s government shutdown, but Trump is insisting that we fork over billions of our dollars just to keep him from looking like the fool that he is. And people like JC are actually buying it. You’ve got to be kidding me.

Oh and b/t/w JC, it does not hurt when I think. It is safe for you to try it sometime.

  16. In a civilized country that idiot not understanding the difference between to: and bcc: would be sued. The employees insurance would have to pay for it. I’d certainly sue.

Fellow Americans, you wanted trump? Stick with it, stop wining and assume responsibility for it. If you are old enough to vote, you should understand what you did and just shut op or starting to fix things. Every democracy has the leader it deserves.

Blaming gery or the media is cheap and childish.

  18. @JC which explains why lead poisoning is a thing in the USA. Your pols are not corrupt at all! They only get paid by lobbyists for Saudi Arabia, and lick Saudi arseholes like that orange skinned molester you admire.
Of course the broken down infrastructure which causes huge traffic problems is a symbol of a first world
    Country.
Your first world country has such a large navy. Sadly you can’t even afford to maintain the ships you have.
Try harder, dear hate filled clown. You’re only proving yourself stupider than anyone ever thought.
Ps. It’s obvious you didn’t get groped last night. You might have been in a better mood if you had.

  19. Hahahaha. @JC claims she has an MD. What she doesn’t mention is that she bought it online, and it stands for Master of Dimwittedness

  20. Being a con artist suits you, Jethro.

Slightly under 45% of illegal immigrants in the US today are the results of visa overstays. You were doing fine with your slight exaggeration of 50% or more, but then you just couldn’t help with your natural tendency to lie and started claiming NBC as a factual source.

Let’s look at real facts. Half of our 10.7 million illegal immigrants today are Mexican at about 5.4 million. At 1.9 million, we have those from Central America, which consists primarily of those from the Northern Triangle. So your LBBs account for 68% of the problem. Now you pulled a number out of your ass reportedly showing that 2/3 of those entering legally on visas end up overstaying. The State Department last year issued 1.4 million visas to Mexicans and less that 100 thousand to your LBBs from the Northern Triangle. That leaves 3.4 million illegal aliens unaccounted for. Perhaps they are the result of those remaining 5.1 million visa holders. If, as you claim, 2/3 overstay, that would be true.

Except it isn’t. Math is your friend, Jethro. Next year in fourth grade you might have a better grasp of that. The State Department issued 9.7 million visas last year. By your calculations, we should have 13.7 million illegal aliens in the US. Except we don’t.

And we don’t have 7.9 million either. Nor 40.5 million. You see, Jethro, there’s the pesky little issue of DHS having legally admitted over 50.4 arrivals in 2017 with records showing only about 545,000 of those overstaying.

Jethro, overstayers do not make up 2/3 of our total illegal alien population now nor the annual increase. The 10.7 million illegal aliens we have now is a cumulative of over a decade. Any way you look at it, right now on an annual the odds are better that one entering with a visa is less likely to become an illegal alien or suck money off taxpayers than your LBB swimming the Rio Grande.

But let’s say they did. Just as with the often repeated retarded drivel that more American citizens murder people than illegal aliens, in many cases at least the latter could be prevented by keeping your LBBs out.

So tell us what other measures work better and cost less? If you and your other retards support those measures, why weren’t they enacted under the Clinton or Obama administrations? Why aren’t they being considered right now as we speak so we can see a wall is unnecessary?

Now are you going to pull another story out of your ass about how it’s so easy to find overstayers here illegally? Of course you will! I suppose it would be easy if ICE were given the resources. But you whiny little bitches hate ICE even more than the idea of keeping your LBB from swimming the Rio Grande.

Your racism schtick is getting old, Jethro. Preventing crime is not racism. And it is a criminal offense to enter the country illegally. By your retarded logic, your LBB are incredibly racist, too. There was a Caucasian guy arrested in Cancun because he didn’t have a proper visa. WTF is the ACLU and Whiny Little Bitch Brigade on that one, Jethro?

I will give you one thing, though, Jethro. I don’t like the idea of a wall. Walls are seldom pretty and never 100% effective. They cost a lot of money to build and maintain. I much prefer machine gun nests. Cheap, efficient and barely noticeable.

Don’t forget your pain meds, Jethro.

  21. @747naked: “Colleague”, moron. Learn to read. Or don’t they teach reading in shithole countries?

Hmmm … lead poisoning versus tiger maulings on a daily basis. Freeways congested with cars versus water buffalos. A navy versus 747always running naked on a plane because Pakistanis make him envious. Chinese scare him.

Don’t worry, when the Chinese invade they will still let you live with mommy.

  22. @JC the jungli chuthan sweetly ignores the bit about maintenance issues faced by the US Navy. But then like any good Trumpette, she ignores the truth.
Quite interesting that Chuthan brings up syphilis. Coincidental honesty.

  23. To quote the Jungli Chuthan @JC please “earn your English”. After all good racist Americans like her should be able to use their first language well. Hahahahahaha

  24. Oh, my word! These Trump people really are rabid/feral/full of hate. One suspects that Ms Pelosi has their measure though.

  25. Tiger mauling on a daily basis dear Jungli Chuthan? Would love to know that there were so many tigers alive! Yet again the truth can not come between a Trumpette and a typical lie. Why is @JC like this?

  26. @747naked: Mr. Shitholer, you are so ignorant about your own shithole. Shithole India has over 4,000 tigers in the wild. 70% of the world’s tigers feast on turds like you.

Stay naked though. It disgusts the tigers, but gets you attention from your mommy.

Did you find yourself in the photos, shitholer?

  27. So 70% of the worlds tigers are man eaters? You’ve still not substantiated your syphilitic rantings, dear Jungli Chuthan. Please share some facts, rather than the delusions of your syphilitic mind.

  28. Aww. So sweet. Jungli Chuthan grabbed some random images to bolster her argument. The rantings of the syphilitic one @JC continue! Keep on smelly one! Raise the swastika like the Nazi you are!
Ps. Now I realise why you kept asking your mum to call you Eva!

  29. @747naked: Shitholers like you from Shithole India are ignorant about their own shithole. Did you ever go to third grade, Mr. Shitholer?

“Man-eating tigers have been a recurrent problem for India, especially in Kumaon, Garhwal and the Sundarbans mangrove swamps of Bengal.”

    It’s in Wiki.

But nice try Apu. Go kiss your water buffalo goodnight, Chee Chee.

  30. Dear @JungliChuthan you seriously lack cognitive skills. You claimed that 70% of the worlds tigers eat humans.
You’re so incredibly stupid fraulein Braun! You can’t even keep your arguments straight. Hahahahahaha. Seig Heil Fraulein Chuthan!

  31. Even so dear Jungli Chuthan, 70% of the tigers have never been man eaters. Oh the stupidity and poor hygiene is so strong with @JC

  32. @747naked: All tigers will eat people, Swami. It’s in your shithole India newspapers almost every week. Can’t you read well, Chee Chee?

Run along and kiss your water buffalo goodnight, Apu. Pray the Chinese don’t invade and defeat you again.

  33. Which newspapers dear Chuthan. Still waiting for you to gain some courage and state some facts.
Speaking of defeats, your country has already run from Vietnam. Such a big navy, such a first world country, and you still ran with your tails between your legs from the Vietcong! And now Bone Spur Boy wants to run from Afghanistan. Hahahahahahaha

  34. And do learn to be nice to the Chinese. If it weren’t for their purchases of Treasuries you’re advanced nation would have been bankrupt already, dear @Jungli Chuthan

  35. @747Chee-Chee: Apu, do you need your literacy volunteer to help you read?

    https://www.scmp.com/news/asia/south-asia/article/2072262/no-one-safe-after-dark-indian-villages-terrorised-tiger-attacks

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5553213/Horrifying-footage-shows-aftermath-tiger-attacks-Indian-village.html

If tigers were so cute and cuddly, Apu, everybody would have one as a pet.

Yes, Chinese invest in America. With ShitholeIndia, they just kill your soldiers and then you bend over and grab your ankles. You like that part.

  36. @747naked: Apu, you spend a lot of time on that jobby jabber site. Are you pulling your Chee Chee trick to get into his pants?

What does “many advanced society” mean in ShitholeIndia? And really, “much first world”? Is there any language you aren’t retarded in, Apu?

I’m not sure if that nutjob is Trump’s spiritual advisor. But even if she is, he has a better one than Ghandi. His were a cow, a goat and a flying monkey. Or was the flying monkey his wife? Aren’t you glad you are rich, Apu, and can afford a water buffalo?

  37. Interesting that @Jungli Chuthan doesn’t mention Vietnam! The truth hurts her in her ungroped posterior!

  38. Ooh BTW dear Jungli Chuthan @JC the articles you shared still don’t substantiate your assertion that 70% of tigers in the world are man eaters. Hahahahahaha. Get groped Jc

  39. Apu, clean-up on aisle three. When you finish, ask Bart for reading lessons.

Nobody said only 70% are man-eaters (or in your case, Chee Chee eaters). Virtually 100% are. But of those 100%, about 70% live in ShitholeIndia and can feast on turds like you, Apu. We realize math and English is tough for you, but if Bart can do it so should a Chee Chee like you, Apu.

Check out those modern inventions we call calendars, Apu. Vietnam was about 40 years ago. Chinese humiliation and subjugation of ShitholeIndia is almost a daily event on the border until now.

If it makes you feel like a man, hold on tight to your water buffalo, Chee Chee. Poor little coolie like you, Apu, needs all the love they can get.

Oh, I did get groped. By your mommy.

  40. And the war with China was 58 years ago, dear Jungli Chuthan.
    Hahahahaha.
You’ve still not proved your statement about 70% of tigers being man eaters. But then you’re a little coward, just like your forefathers.
And Russia’s humiliation of the USA continues every day Bone Spur Boy is in office. Dosvidania Frau Braun! @JC
