- In the U.S. the Durbin Amendment to Dodd Frank financial reform legislation killed debit card rewards. Debit cards are no longer a profit center for banks, so they don’t pay you to run transactions through their system or compete for that slice of business. (Without debit card profits, checking accounts are no longer so profitable, hence minimum balance and direct deposit requirements for fee-free checking have become common — and many have been shut out of the banking system which is why I was once so enthusiastic about American Express’ Bluebird.)
Meanwhile in the UAE a new debit card earns up to 5 Emirates miles per US dollar spent with earning based on how much money cardmembers have in the bank’s savings account.

Hate to be grumpy about it, but I wish all bloggers would refrain from referring to “carrier imposed charges” as either “taxes” or “fuel” surcharges. I got a settlement from BA over this, so let’s not play that game for them.. No euphemisms, please. Scam charges are scam charges.
