7 Reasons You’ll Want the New IHG Credit Card

I do not write about all credit cards that are available -- instead focusing on miles, points, and cash back (and currencies that can be converted into the same).

IHG® Rewards Club Premier Credit Card

The new Chase-issued IHG® Rewards Club Premier Credit Card has a big a bonus for a card with the loyalty program for Intercontinental, Kimpton, Crowne Plaza and Holiday Inn. There are new benefits for this product, even existing IHG Rewards Club credit card customers can apply, and anecdotally IHG cards have been relatively easier to get approved for.

There are 7 reasons to get this card:

  1. 80,000 points. The card’s initial bonus is 80,000 points after $2000 spend within 3 months..

  2. Elite status. You get Platinum elite status as long as you’re a cardmember.

  3. Annual free night after each account anniversary year. The annual free night is limited to most of the hotels that are bookable for 40,000 points per night or less. It also must be used within 12 months of issue.

  4. Free reward night on points stays of 4 or more nights. That’s better than the ‘5th night free’ some other chains offer and amounts to a 25% discount on four night award stays.

  5. Not subject to 5/24. For many Chase cards you can only get approved if you’ve had fewer than 5 new credit card accounts in the last 24 months. That was never the case for IHG Rewards Club cards. And reports are that’s still true here. Initial data points that I’ve seen suggest that ‘5/24’ does not apply to this card. That makes it the perfect Chase card to get if you’ve had several new cards opened in the last two years.

  6. New card product. While Chase is limiting Southwest cards to one personal card at a time for the whole family, that does not appear to be the case for the IHG cards. So if you have an existing personal IHG Rewards Club credit card reports are people are getting approved for this one too. That’s great for the 4th night free on points redemptions and the annual free night as well as the signup bonus points.

  7. Gift someone Global Entry. The card comes with Global Entry or TSA Precheck fee credit (up to $100 every 4 years). I have tons of cards now with similar benefit, so I have gifted the credit to friends. They just use my card to pay the application fee and it credits back automatically.

The card is worth getting, in my opinion. And it’s worth keeping for the annual free night and for the 4th night free on IHG Rewards Club free night redemptions. But I wouldn’t use it for everyday spending.

Bottom-line is that the card has a good bonus — that many of you can actually get — with a low spend requirement, and once you have the card it’s worth keeping but not using.

  1. Gary,
I have IHG timeshares and use this credit card to charge my installment payments to pay for it at zero percent interest. My question is does this credit card have a multiplier for me doing this?

  2. Another benefit of chase IHG is no foreign transaction fee. At times in my churning it is the only card I have with that feature.

  3. I received an offer to upgrade my current IHG card to this card for 5K points after any spend. Should I just apply for this card and then cancel my older card?

  4. Used my anniversary night at the intercontinental Boston last Thursday ! Rooms were over $600 per night ! Great value and upgrade as well .

  5. When you say you can stack benefits of both cards if you already have an IHG card, would I be able to get two free nights in a row, using the free night benefit from each card?
