Flying Blue Promo Awards Dis North America

One of the great values in the Air France KLM Flying Blue program, historically, has been their ‘promo awards’ — a rotating set of cities for discounted travel. You can fly from any featured city through Paris (if Air France) or Amsterdam (if KLM) to anywhere in Europe for fewer miles.

Once upon a time they were an amazing value, one way business class was normally 50,000 miles and selected cities were 50% off. More recently the ‘normal’ cost has been 62,500 miles and the discounts have been smaller.

The number of cities chosen each month for travel to and from North America has shrunk as well. Last month’s promo awards were disappointing — but not non-existent for North America.

Promo awards for April booking and June and July travel have been live for a couple of days. I’ve waited to post thinking it was possible they weren’t all loaded, that they could still be in the process of updating. But nothing has changed: There are no North America promo awards this month.

At FlyingBlue.com the filter to search promo awards doesn’t even include North America as an option.

On the Air France site at least North America still exists, it’s just empty of choices.

Sad.

  1. Hey Gary, sort of related to this…. have you played with the new award charts for flying blue? I found that the new price for Detroit to Europe is 53000 in business. Not that I want to fly from Detroit but it is the closest international hub to me. Other cities were less expensive than the old chart too (N.A. To Europe) but DTW was the lowest I found with the new redemption rates.

  2. Impressively bad. What strikes me as odd is that FB controls the inventory for saver awards, so even if they choose some secondary city to offer a promo from in the US, they’re not opening themselves up to limitless cheap redemptions. Of course, it’s been quite a while since a good 50% off offer in business class was on the table for a favorable time of year anyway, but 25% off for business class would be better than nothing.

  3. I’m not sure we really missed anything… last few have been YYC or YEG to Europe and nothing else in biz.
