New Gas Station Savings Benefit for Chase Sapphire Cardmembers

I receive compensation for many links on this blog. You don’t have to use these links, but I am grateful to you if you do. American Express, Citibank, Chase, Capital One and other banks are advertising partners of this site. I do not write about all credit cards that are available -- instead focusing on miles, points, and cash back (and currencies that can be converted into the same).

Chase Sapphire Reserve and Chase Sapphire Preferred Card cardmembers are eligible for instant Fuel Rewards Gold status through the end of 2018.

That’s good for 5 cents off per gallon at Shell stations. (Base membership in the free program saves 3 cents per gallon.)

The offer was already available for Chase Freedom and Freedom Unlimited cardmembers.

Joining the program will get you 3 months of Gold status, this is better since you’ll have it through the end of the year. And there’s no requirement to actually pay for the gas with a Chase Sapphire card. You can use a card that bonuses gas like Citi ThankYou Premier which is back with an offer to earn 50,000 bonus points.

IHG Rewards Club gives you Fuel Rewards status with even more savings for elites: IHG Platinum elite members members get 6 cents off, Spire Elites 7 cents off.

Once a member of fuel rewards you can stack savings earned with other activities as well.

  1. I get 10 cents off gallon, or 20 cents when there is promo, with the Just for You program associated with many grocery stores, such as Vons. Also, currently, with the Freedom quarterly promo, you get 5X UR points per dollar spent on any fuel purchase even when filling up at Sam’s or Costco gas stations.

  2. And in many cities you can get a 5 cents/gal discount for using a Shell Gift Card in addition to your Fuel Rewards discount. Also there have been occasional 25 cents/gal discounts on TMobile Tuesdays, which can be stacked with other discounts.

  3. I use Shell very often. I previously avoided Shell because I often saw it as more expensive than other options. After trying Shell on a few promotions i realized that my car had more pep using shell. I know this is true; I also know that essentially all gasoline brands should be the same but I have noticed a clear difference with better results using Shell or Mobil.
