Usually the reasons not to check a bag are the risk the bag will be lost, and the extra time checked baggage takes at the airport. But here’s a good reminder that bad things can happen to your belongings when they’re out of your possession.
A single toilet in the a womens restroom at Nashville International Airport has contaminated about 200 Southwest Airlines checked bags.
The restroom was above the checked baggage handling area, and it had a sewage leak which flowed through the floor onto and into bags checked onto Southwest’s morning flights.
The bags are currently being sanitized, and replacement bags are being offered on a case-by-case basis, the airline said.
According to the airline’s statement, its employees “identified which bags may have been affected” and are “proactively contacting customers, processing bags and reuniting customers with their luggage.”
Airport officials say that “some passengers opted to travel without their damaged bags.” Ya think?

Does baggage insurance cover this? Who the heck would want that stuff back.

*facepalm* That pun should be classified as a war crime.
No amount of cleaning will get rid of that foul smell and it permeates the inside of the suitcase. I would have to get rid of everything in it as well as the suitcase.
