Now You Can Order Your Sandwich When You Hit the Tarmac at O’Hare. And That’s a Good Thing.

The single greatest sandwich at any airport can be found at Tortas Frontera, at Chicago O’Hare (terminals 1, 3, and 5).

The only downside is that they make the sandwiches fresh, and while they’re generally ready in about 10 minutes I’ve turned up.. had to wait in line.. and been told to expect a 15 minute wait once I’ve been able to order. That can make things dicey on a quick connection – a choice between a delicious choriqueso and risking having to gate check a bag.

Fortunately there’s now an app for online ordering. The app is available from the iTunes store and from Google Play.

My new strategy will be to place my order on touchdown. Then the sandwich should be ready as I stroll up to the counter.

I’ve been known to pick up a sandwich on my way out of the airport, not just when originating or connecting there. This will help eliminate the time tradeoff for United and American flyers (the app does not appear to support the international terminal 5 location).

I’m probably more excited by this than I should be, but anything that’s a convenience and delicious at O’Hare really does need to be celebrated.

  1. I have never passed through O’Hare and not made time to eat here. I lived in Chicago for a short time and Rick Bayless’ restaurants are still one of my favorite memories.

  2. I wish that every travel writer on earth would stop pushing this place. It is not that good compared to real torta places and is very expensive, even by airport standards.

  3. Finally! A use for technology that even Luddites like me can appreciate.

This is the most delicious (and consistently well made) airport meal I’ve ever had.

  4. I tried this much-touted place and was disappointed. It was just good, but not “OMG I’m in heaven”.
