Earn 25,000 Bonus Points By Making Transfers Into Aeroplan

Aeroplan is offering a bonus of up to 25,000 miles for transferring in points from other programs.

Through May 25, the more points you transfer the more bonus points you’ll earn. These are threshold bonuses rather than a straight percentage bonus, but the total bonus you earn is based on the cumulative amount of points transferred into the program. In other words you can make multiple transfers from several programs if you wish in order to get up to the next level of transfer bonus.

We’ve certainly seen this promotion before, such as back in November.

This bonus doesn’t require a single transfer to be as large as a bonus threshold. Aeroplan will count the total miles transferred in from eligible partners when calculating the bonus you earn.

Hotel partners, Hertz, and points.com are eligible for the transfer bonus. Diners Club Club Rewards is eligible, but other credit card partners like American Express Membership Rewards are not.

If you use Points.com, only exchanges are eligible for the bonus and not points trades with other members.

The most impressive numbers come from Starwood points transfers, of course. Normally 80,000 points would transfer to 100,000 Aeroplan miles — but with this promotion 80,000 Starpoints would yield 125,000 points in an Aeroplan account.

In general I am no longer a fan of Aeroplan. I’ve even called it the most devalued frequent flyer program in North America.

They gutted their award chart in mid-2011. They added fuel surcharges on about half their partners a few months later. Then last summer they announced another award chart devaluation.

But there still are a handful of good value awards, like 90,000 mile business class roundtrip to nearer Europe. You won’t pay expensive fuel surcharges flying United or LOT across the pond, either. So there are strategic uses for this.
