145% Bonus Buying Star Alliance Avianca LifeMiles – 1.35 Cents a Mile One Week Only

Star Alliance member Avianca’s LifeMiles program is selling miles with a 145% bonus (so 1.35 cents apiece) through November 27.

This time it’s not a tiered offer, it’s a straight-up bonus. You can buy up to 200,000 miles.

LifeMiles is a fantastic Star Alliance program.

  • No fuel surcharges
  • Reasonable award chart

Not all connections are bookable, you’re pretty much limited to the options you see on their redemption website (which is serviceable) and telephone customer service is challenging (e-mail is better). I’m a fan of the program and have a few hundred thousand miles there myself.

This is about the lowest LifeMiles regularly sells miles for. They’ve certainly had lower targeted offers, and once or twice gotten the price down a few more basis points, but it’s close to as good as it gets.

Still I’d only buy with a specific use in mind because they do offer deals on purchased miles regularly.

  1. Can you clarify this line for me (us?)

“LifeMiles is a fantastic Star Alliance program and a 60,000 mile signup bonus will absolutely be worthwhile.”

I don’t understand what you mean by 60,000 mile sign up bonus.

  2. @Paul, You can get the Banco Popular credit card for $149 fee and get 60,000 Avianca Lifemiles. My wife and I both did this earlier this year. I “think” it was worth it though the hassle of dealing with a Puerto Rican bank and the Avianca perople (I think they were in Colombia) was distressing when the miles didn’t post on my wife’s account. Took a couple of months, many phone calls and even more emails … My Spanish is weak, just enough to do well traveling in in South and Central America or Mexico but not near good enough to argue with these people.

I have not used these miles yet, but will do so when we next want a business class trip to Europe. We will top up the extra miles needed by transferring from SPG or Citi Thank You Points when we get new Citi card bonuses next year.
