50% Off Garuda Indonesia First Class Awards, London – Jakarta

Last December Garuda Indonesia — a SkyTeam member and Citi transfer partner — offered 90% off all award tickets. You had to book by phone and getting credit cards processed was a pain, though it was an amazing deal for those who persevered.

Now via Straight to the Points they have a great new promotion for both mileage-earning and redemption on their London – Jakarta route.

Earning miles on paid tickets: Flights between October 31 and November 30 earn 50% bonus miles in first class (F/A/P classes) or Business Class (J/C/D classes) or 25% bonus miles in deep discounted business (I class) and more expensive coach classes (Y/B/M/K/N). So if you have to be spending a lot to fly in either or both directions on this flight, that’s great.

Redeeming at up to half off: They’re offering 50% off first class and 30% off business and coach if you book by November 30 and travel October 31 through January 31.

Here’s how this prices each way:

  • First Class: 95,000 miles
  • Business Class: 63,000 miles
  • Economy Class: 35,000 miles

Citibank ThankYou points do not transfer instantly. They usually take about two days. So you may want to hold the award by phone and ticket with the Amsterdam office. However this promotion prices correctly on the Garuda website.

This is valid in either direction or roundtrip. Roundtrip fuel surcharges run $310. You pay the UK premium cabin departure tax leaving London.

Garuda Indonesia has one of the world’s better first class products, the service is phenomenal though the hard product isn’t top 5.

Note also that they frequently sell first class at a price where their normal mileage costs are somewhat nuts. In fact a one way ticket may run $2500, so the normal 190,000 mile price only gets you 1.3 cents per mile in value.

  1. Are the full ground services (e.g. airport transfer in CGK) included with award flights? Is there a full list of ground services?
