American Express has a limited-time offer, only the second time they’ve ever made it, for their premium ($75 annual fee) Hilton credit card — now that they’ve done a deal to be the exclusive issuer of Hilton cards, shutting out Citibank going forward. And they’ve got a nice offer for the no annual fee version of the card, too.

Hilton HonorsTM Surpass® Card from American Express is offering 100,000 Hilton Honors points after $3000 in eligible purchases on the card in your first 3 months of cardmembership. This is a limited-time offer ending October 4, 2017. Plus this card earns a free weekend night on its first approval anniversary date.

The card earns 12 Honors points per dollar on eligible Hilton purchases, 6 points per dollar at U.S. restaurants, US supermarkets, and US gas stations, and 3 points per dollar on all other eligible purchases.

Cardmembers get complimentary Gold status in the Honors program, and $40,000 on eligible purchases each calendar year earns Diamond status through the end of the next calendar year.

The Surpass card also comes with a Priority Pass Select card for lounge access (this version doesn’t include free guests or free visits)

Hilton Honors™ Card from American Express can earn 50,000 Hilton Honors Bonus Points after you spend $1,000 on the card within the first 3 months of account opening plus an additional 25,000 Bonus Points after an additional $1000 in purchases on the card within your first 6 months. This offer expires October 4, 2017.

Earning is 7 Hilton Honors Bonus Points per dollar of eligible purchases charged on your Card directly with a participating hotel or resort within the Hilton Portfolio; 5 Hilton Honors Bonus Points for each dollar of eligible purchases on your Card at U.S. restaurants, U.S. supermarkets, and U.S. gas stations; 3 Hilton Honors Bonus Points for all other eligible purchases on your Card.

$20,000 spend on eligible purchases on the card in a calendar year earns Hilton Honors Gold status through the end of the next calendar year.

  1. Thanks for posting this. Even given how little Hilton points are worth, this indeed sounds like a good deal.

But, as per Amex rules, if you’ve had the Hilton Surpass before in the past you can’t quality for this offer now, right?

  2. So this card now to be better than the now defunct Citi Hilton Reserve. Both gave you gold status; points earnings are higher with the Amex; fee is lower with the Amex & you get an annual free weekend night stay without the $10,000 spend requirement.

    Am I missing anything?

  3. Ok, apologies if I’m dense but can you clarify what this free night offer means for current Surpass cardholders?

    1) Will I automatically start getting a free night on my Anniversary? Or is this a one-time offer for new signups (Like, year 1 they’ll get a free night but year 2 they get nothing, etc)

    2) I have a family member who signed up for Surpass a little over a month ago – is it possible for them to get a match on this offer?

    Thanks in advance

  4. Can you upgrade to Surpass card from the lower level Amex Hilton HHonors card?

Also, wondering if you have heard what’s going to happen to the Citicard accounts.

  5. What’s the app link? The link you posted opens a page to “Add a User to an existing card”, not the app for the 100K offer.

  6. I have a Hilton Honors Citi VISA and need to decide what to do before the end of December. Do you know if AMEX will be offering any extra incentives for the Citi VISA crowd to switch?

  7. It seems the free night is a one-time thing, not every year going forward.
    The term:
    “Hilton Honors Free Weekend Night
If your application is not received by 10/04/2017, you will not be eligible for the free weekend night offer even if your application is approved.
The free weekend night award will be sent as an email from Hilton to the email address listed on your Hilton Honors account within [6-8 weeks] after
the first anniversary date of the Card account. The free weekend night award can be redeemed at participating properties in the Hilton Honors portfolio
for a weekend night. The free weekend night award must be redeemed for stays consumed within 12 months after the date of issuance. Basic Card Members
should call Hilton customer service and mention the American Express award to redeem. The Basic Card Member can also check their Hilton account for
issuance of the award by logging into their profile at hilton.com or by calling 1-800-548-8690. To ensure receipt of the award e-mail notification,
the Basic Card Member should confirm the correct email address is listed under their Honors account profile. To receive the free weekend night award
your Card account must not be cancelled or in default at the time of fulfillment. Free weekend night award is not transferable and may not be redeemed
for cash or Honors points. The free weekend night award is valid for one (1) night standard accommodation, double occupancy, subject to availability,
at participating properties in the Hilton Honors portfolio, excluding those listed at HiltonHonors.com/weekendcertificate. Unused free weekend night
award will be forfeited. Free weekend night award is combinable and may be added to existing paid or award stays. This promotion may be combined with
other Hilton or Free Night promotions in market during the same time; however, Hilton Honors Points earnings are exclusive of each other. Free
weekend night includes all applicable taxes; however, the Basic Card Member may be responsible for payment of additional mandatory resort fees at
participating Hilton Hotels & Resorts where resort fees are applicable. Free weekend night award redemptions may be cancelled pursuant to the free
weekend Night Award cancellation policy on the Hilton Program website (hilton.com). The Basic Card Member should check his/her Hilton account to
confirm the expiration date of his/her free weekend night. Limit one free weekend night award after the first anniversary of your Card Membership.

  8. I have the basic Hilton Amex (no annual fee) and I have received an offer to upgrade to the Surpass. 100,000 points after $3,000 spend in three months. No mention of a free night.

Will the Citi Visa “expire” or should I proactively cancel the card?

  9. I received the same targeted offer to upgrade my basic amex to the surpass and get the 100,000 pt bonus. I have had the surpass in the past but, in this targeted offer, I see no mention of not getting the bonus if I previously had the card . I accepted the offer and will have to see if the points post.
