Limited-Time: 50,000 Mile Signup Bonus for DirecTV

DirecTV is offering 50,000 American AAdvantage miles for new signups on 24 month agreements for ‘select’ packages or above.

The biggest offer I’ve ever seen before was 30,000 United miles.

With a little bit of effort service can be cancelled and re-upped earning miles multiple times especially when you cycle the names of household members your service is under. If you’re going to have TV anyway, you might as well get lots of miles for it.

Some have swapped accounts with others in their household for years. Count the number of people in your household and multiply out the miles you can earn — signing up, consider paying a $20 per month cancellation charge for remaining time in your 24 month agreement after the miles post, then having the next person in your family sign up.

Through May 20 pricing for a select package is listed at $90 per month locked-in for a year including “monthly fees for a Genie HD DVR + three (3) add’l receivers, and standard prof’l installation in up to four rooms” plus “taxes, $19.95 handling & delivery fee” and other bogus add-ons you can expect from a tv provider and from their regulators. After a year package pricing reverts to DirecTV standard pricing.

The offer is for new customers who haven’t had DirecTV service in their name in the past two years. Miles won’t post for about four months. Sign up by phone and provide your AAdvantage number when doing so.

  1. I got screwed out of a DirecTV promo years ago for 25,000 AA miles – I followed the instructions and did everything I was supposed to, yet they were insistent that they had no record of me doing it and refused to give me the miles.

In other words — if anyone does this, proceed with caution, because they may or may not actually honor it.

  2. Am I missing something?

If I do the math correctly, that’s a minimum of four months @110 / month and then 20 months of termination fee @20 / month, or $840 if everything goes smoothly. That’s 1.68 cents per mile which is okay-ish but certainly doesn’t sound like it’s worth all the effort. And plenty of opportunities for something to go wrong (eg, the miles don’t post for an extra month or something).

  3. Yeah, this is NOT worth it… especially to those of us that have “cut the cord” and are only on internet with Hulu/Netflix/Amazon/Sling subscriptions. If it was 12mo contract or something else shorter, maybe, but no way at 24mo.

  4. I got 25,000 miles and they wanted to charge me an early cancellation fee. I was on some promo for the first year and then the price shot up dramatically. 50,000 miles is a good deal. I had no problem getting my miles. The service is good, but I don’t watch a ton of tv. Proceed with caution….

  5. Yes, if you value the actual tv service at zero this is too much trouble and cost just for the miles. Still it is a very good deal for tv service!

  6. By calling and talking to a person, I was able to get them to consolidate the benefits of a 25K AA offer, with a different promotion’s 24 month rate lock and to do it at the lowest rate I could find (lower than the rate from the AA promotion). My intention was/is still to actually keep the service rather than cancel and cycle. YMMV but the worst they can say is no.

  7. Hey Gary,
The cancel and re-upped link will not open. Can you please provide me the link so I do not screw it up. Thanks

  8. Be careful with the AAdvantage/DirecTV 50,000 miles offer.

I signed up for DirecTV on 4/15/17 after receiving an email from American Airlines AAdvantage on 4/12/17 that said “Act now and earn 50,000 American Airlines AAdvantage miles when you switch to DirecTV”. I signed up for a qualifying package (Choice) with a two year contract. A few days after installation, I received an email from DirecTV that said I am getting only 25,000 miles. When signing up for service, I was careful to say which offer I received (50,000 miles) and never heard anything from the representative that I would get fewer miles than what was in the offer.

Once I got the email that stated I am only getting 25,000 miles, I started a chat with DirecTV. The chat rep said that the offer was “up to 50,000 miles”. Nowhere in the offer email does it say anything about “up to 50,000”; it just says “earn 50,000 miles”. I ended up having to call because the chat rep could not handle this type of problem. When I called, the rep did not say anything about why I might receive only 25,000 miles but she supposedly entered an “escalation ticket” and that I should hear something in a few days. I am not holding my breath and don’t know if there’s anything I can do if they choose to screw me out of 25,000 miles. I probably wouldn’t have signed up if the offer was for only 25,000 miles.

  9. I called in and signed up for this back in April, and haven’t gotten any miles yet. Called in the other day and they created an “escalation ticket” and today somebody called me back and says I can’t have the miles because the phone number I used was not linked to this offer. When I signed up I called the number given on their advertisement (which is still active BTW).
I’m currently on hold waiting to discuss with a supervisor.

  10. Follow up to my original post:

I have had active service with DirecTV since May 6, 2017 and STILL haven’t received any miles. I keep getting told different time frames each time I call. Originally, miles were to be posted after having active service for 30 days. Then a DirecTV supervisor tells me that the service has to be active for 60 days and then within 30 days after that 60 days of active service passes, I should receive miles. So now I should see my miles at the beginning of August.

Somehow I think it’s going to be a fight to get the miles, if I ever do. If they don’t deliver, I should be able to cancel my service without penalty because they are not delivering on the offer I signed up for. There is a local news station that LOVES to hear consumer nightmares like this and claims to respond to every inquiry. I have no idea if that will help me but I’ll be sure to contact anyone I can about this. Don’t tell me I can have something and then refuse to deliver.
