This ticket is more than half fuel surcharges, even though the fuel surcharges are relatively reasonable for European travel, since the base fare is so low.

2) Can we just pay the base fare or do we have to pay the taxes? If we have to pay the taxes, why not just quote the whole price? You sound like a hotel not mentioning the resort fee.
Yesterday some really low fares appeared on my Google Flights saved search. West Coast to Europe, connecting to a small European city where I’ve never seen a fare war, for $625. Even for winter, that’s a very low price.
The current fare war is the largest I’ve seen. It makes spending miles for coach travel seem pointless, even as spending miles for premium cabin travel seems impossibly difficult. Chase may be doing me a favor by slowing me down with their 5/24 rule.
