Unannounced 20% Off United Award Sale (and Up to 25% Off Asia)

United appears to be discounting domestic economy awards by 20%. This looks like an unannounced sale, with short haul flights under 700 miles in distance pricing at 8000 MileagePlus miles each way (instead of 10,000) and other domestic flights pricing at 10,000 miles (instead of 12,500). Here are advance purchase trips showing the discounted pricing:

These discounts are for economy awards only, require roundtrip booking, and advance purchase as well. There also appear to be some dates blacked out from the discount.

In addition, United just posted a redemption discount to Asia which is 25% off North Asia awards and 22% off South Asia awards.

They’re giving 8888 miles off each way based on roundtrip purchase, so a discount of 17,776 miles on an economy roundtrip between the US or Canada and North Asia (usually 70,000 miles) or South Asia (usually 80,000 miles).

This discount requires flying a United-operated non-stop between the US and China or Hong Kong for your transpacific segment, with roundtrip saver award flights booked between August 11 and August 22 for travel August 29 through April 30. December 9 through February 3 are blacked out for this discount.

While roundtrip travel is required you can fly one-way at the discounted saver award price and the other way as a more expensive standard award and still get the discount. (Hopefully you will not actually do this.)

Remember that this discount only applies to North Asia and South Asia award zones and therefore not to Japan which is its own zone. The discount does not apply to routings via Japan or United’s new non-stop to Singapore though you can connect to Singapore..

For those of you who like to use your miles for economy travel, without fuel surcharges, and visit Asia this is a good sale.

  1. Just checked into this, but the flights must be non-stop, and cannot involve another carrier. So unless you live in New York, your choices are very limited, unfortunately!
