Any opinions expressed in this post are my own, and have not been reviewed, approved, or endorsed by my advertising partners. I do not write about all credit cards that are available -- instead focusing on miles, points, and cash back (and currencies that can be converted into the same).
Information related to the IHG Rewards Club Select Credit Card was neither provided nor reviewed by Chase. I do not have my own direct referral link to this product, and gathered information on its offerings independently.
IHG Rewards Club has released its new set of PointBreaks — hotel rewards at just 5000 points per night. The new list has about 140 properties, but doesn’t hit the biggest cities most people are traveling to or the most desirable resorts.
Although it’s notable that there are two Intercontinental hotels on the list — Mendoza (perfect for wine tasting) and Phnom Penh (where you should stop before or after the amazing temples of Siem Reap).
Twelve — Or More — Hotel Nights For One Credit Card Signup
The IHG® Rewards Club Select Credit Card lets you earn 60,000 bonus points after you spend $1,000 on purchases in the first 3 months of account opening. The bonus is enough for 2 nights at most IHG hotel properties (e.g. Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn) and as many as 12 nights for PointBreaks hotels.
It also gives you a free night each year of card membership at over 4,900 hotels worldwide. That alone is worth more than the card’s annual fee ($0 introductory annual fee the first year, then $49).
And the card comes with automatic platinum elite status and a 10% rebate on your redemptions. Use your points, get 10% back.
That 10% rebate means you actually can get more than 12 nights for the bonus since the most highly leveraged use of the points is with IHG’s ‘PointBreaks’ redemptions which are hotel reward nights for just 5000 points and you’d get the rebate even on these redemptions.
The Next Round of PointBreaks Are Up
IHG Rewards Club has posted the list of the latest PointBreaks hotels available through ctober 31.
5000 points per night is a fantastic deal, the best redemption value for hotels bar none. Unfortunately there aren’t many of their higher end hotels on this list. You have to want one of the specific hotels on the list, want to stay there during the promotion period, and have to act fast because the most desirable properties tend to get pulled down from the list rather quickly.

There are Limits
You can only book 2 reservations per hotel using PointsBreaks during each offer period. The idea is to prevent folks from sitting on (or bartering) reservations.
A pain for some, will help avoid too many cancellations for participating hotels, and should help others to get in on the deal too. Although there will still be some folks in China especially scripting reservations in bulk and trying to resell them.
Five years ago it was rumored that PointBreaks would be discontinued, but they were kept precisely because of how passionate members are about them.
Reserving These Rooms for $35 Per Night
In general that’s about what they’re worth, so I don’t stockpile the points, but they’re certainly well-used for PointBreak redemptions and a fantastic deal even straight-up buying the points.
