THROUGH TOMORROW ONLY: Buy American Airlines Miles at 2 Cents Each and Get Free Magazines

The American AAdvantage online shopping portal has increased its payout on Magazines.com purchases from 25 miles per dollar spent up to 50 miles per dollar spent. This is available through May 27 only.

50 miles per dollar means you’re effectively buying miles at 2 cents apiece — oh, and you get magazine subscriptions too.

Not eligible on automatically renewed subscriptions. Not eligible on purchases made with coupon or discount codes that are not found on this site. Orders cancelled within 90 days are not eligible. Not eligible on gift card, certificates or any other similar cash equivalents.

I value American miles at 1.6 cents apiece so another way of looking at this offer is as an 80% rebate on your magazine purchases in the form of miles.

It’s not the cheapest you can buy miles from American, their 35th anniversary offer came out to 1.89 cents apiece and 1.8 to 2 cents is a standard offer now for selling miles since the US Airways approach to mileage sales took hold last year.

So you don’t want to buy miles this way just to buy miles. Plus the miles don’t post right away. But if you have any magazines you want to subscribe to, to give as gifts, to donate to a library or even that you can argue are reimbursable business expenses this is a great time to do that.

I still think that miles for magazines is the second best mileage-earning deal ever but that was when you could earn better than 100 miles per dollar in your currency of choice thanks to the Goldpoints portal shopping promotion back in 2001.

  1. Almost every magazine they sell is part of the automatic renewal program. Small print on this says “Not eligible on automatically renewed subscriptions.”

I’m thinking some are going to buy subscriptions and find out the aren’t earning the miles….
