News and notes from around the interweb:

• Why the Justice Department Won’t Block Expedia’s Acquisition of Orbitz. I haven’t followed the legal wrangling over anti-trust, but what the deal really means is bulking up to compete against Booking.com/Kayak (Priceline) and against Google which is starting to let you book hotels directly from search.

• Why Do Airplane Windows Have Tiny Holes? Two months old, but fascinating and I realize I never linked to it.. (HT: @tracytimonere)

• Head for Points says British Airways is going to crack down on the money saving practice of throwaway ticketing. He posits they are specifically interested in passengers throwing away London – Germany segments at the end of cheap Hong Kong fares. I’m betting they won’t collect money, but if they’re watching this fare in particular they could certainly crack down on Executive Club accounts. So folks may wish to credit these flights to a different program or better yet avoid throwaway ticketing on Germany-Hong Kong fares specifically.

• Dynamic Airways (“2D”) has commenced Fort Lauderdale – Caracas service. They’ll even accept local currency for tickets. Bold move that could easily end very badly.

  Apparently American flew the Fort Lauderdale-Caracas route up until 2005. Currently service to the country is way down, and Dynamic Airways, which I had never heard of, sees an opportunity.

  Airlines significantly pulled back from the Venezuela market after the government refused to allow them to move over $3 billion in ticket sales out of the country. Those funds remain trapped. Nonetheless, is resuming JFK – Caracas in December (“fool me once…”). If you go, don’t forget to bring your own toilet paper.

• Airlines can pretend any bomb jokes are real, and aren’t liable when you get sent to Guantanamo for them.
