Up to 100,000 Bonus Miles for American Flights to Asia

American is offering a bunch of bonus miles to goose their new Dallas – Hong Kong and Dallas – Shanghai flights as well as Chicago – Shanghai.

Headline offers “up to 100,000 miles” are fun. But what it means is you can earn the bonus four times, for four roundtrips. You’d have to travel in paid premium classes in order to earn 25,000 points per trip though.

Nonetheless, I like that even discount coach fares earn bonuses. Which means that anyone flying a paid ticket should be in a position to earn, and there’s no downside to registering.

The offer is valid for travel between June 24 and December 6 — but only for tickets purchased June 24 onward, a restriction I do not like at all. They don’t want to spend extra money marketing to people that have already bought their tickets, but it sends the message that the business of early adopters, early bookers buying tickets on routes when nobody else is, aren’t important.

American’s Chicago – Shanghai flights have been fantastic for award availability. Their new Dallas routes won’t be profitable any time soon. So bonuses here aren’t surprising. What would be surprising would be additional Asia cities added to the American route map (they’ve only just picked up Seoul as well, really) before these prove themselves.

Not included in the offer are American’s Tokyo flights, Dallas – Seoul, Chicago – Beijing, and their Los Angeles – Shanghai flight.

  1. Hi Gary- not sure where to put this, but do you have any experience trying to book with AA miles CX F availability that appears on the JL/BA/QF sites, but that AA cannot see? Have tried everything, calling back multiple times, having the agent tab through the dates, etc. Very frustrating to not be able to book the seat. Any way around this you’ve found in your booking experience?
